About Department….

The department faculty is actively engaged in research and consultancy work in areas like environmental pollution control, water and waste water analysis, energy auditing and management, polymeric and composite material processing, nanomaterials, computer software development, process development, upgradation, testing and analysis etc. Many large scale and small scale industrial concerns have availed consultancy services from the department and some of them received awards instituted by the Kerala State Pollution Control Board. The faculty members are also rendering technical services to local bodies and other Government agencies as experts in various committees. For the benefit of the general public, various community service activities are being organized using the facilities, experience and expertise available in the department. The department is also an approved centre for AMIE Examinations in the state.

PG lab is equipped with sophisticated instruments like Rheometer and Gas Chromatograph purchased under Technical Education Quality Improvement Program( TEQIP), Thermogravimetric Analyser purchased under District Innovation Fund , the coupled tank system purchased under ‘FIST’, UV Spectrophotometer , TOC analyser, HPLC, UTM, etc. All the classrooms are smart classrooms with up-to-date audio visual teaching aids. The construction of the second floor of the annexe building by the fund sanctioned by DTE is under completion.

Our faculty members have presented papers in international conferences both India and abroad, published papers in various international journals and act as resource persons for various training programmes in other institutions, universities etc. The department has six CERD funded, one TEQIP funded, two externally sponsored and one higher education funded projects to its credit.

Notable publications from the department are ‘Stoichiometry and Process Calculations’ authored by Dr. K. V. Narayanan (HOD, Retd.) and Dr. B. Lakshmikutty Amma (HOD, Retd.)  and  ‘Text  Book  of  Chemical Engineering        Thermodynamics ” authored  by Dr. K.V. Narayanan (HOD, Retd.).  Both are published by Prentice Hall of India. Text book on ‘Mass Transfer, Theory and Applications’ authored by Dr. K.V. Narayanan (HOD, Retd.) and Dr. B   Lakshmikutty   Amma (HOD, Retd.) has been published by CBS publishers and Distributors Pvt. Ltd.

Memorandum of understanding (MoU) is signed with more than ten industries/institutions which include BPCL, FACT,  CMET, Kerala State Pollution Control Board etc. The department provides active support to the college placement wing for the conduct of campus interviews and placement by prominent industries both within and outside the state. Our students got placement in major companies like BPCL, HPCL,BARC,EIL, Reliance Industries Ltd. ISRO, DRDO, KITCO, Apollo Tyres, ,Philips Carbon, IOC, Infosys, CTS, etc. Some have secured admission in IITs, NITs and universities abroad for higher studies. The Department regularly arranges visits to industries for the benefit of students. The students have been participating in national level seminars, conferences and quiz competitions and have brought laurels to the department. The Student Chapter of Kochi Regional Centre of Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE) is functioning in the department. This helps in promoting the Industry- institute interaction to a large extent. The Entrepreneurship Development Forum (EDF) gives guidance to the students in undertaking projects aimed at developing entrepreneurship qualities in them. The ENCON club functioning in the department inculcates the spirit of energy conservation and environment protection in students. The activities of counseling and guidance cell, NSS, Pain and palliative care unit (OASIS) and Students Union help the students to improve their life skills and leadership qualities.

The Chemical Engineering Association provides a forum for the students to interact with the experts from industries and with the alumni of the department. The Chemical Engineering Association had been organizing a number of invited lecture programs by experts from industries for the benefit of students. Sports and various cultural events are also organized by Chemical Engineering Association. Back to Classroom (B2C) program provides opportunity for the students to interact with the alumni of the department. Remedial classes are conducting in weekdays for weak students in different subjects very eagerly by the faculties of our and various departments for the career improvement of the students. The Department has completed its 50 years of magnificent existence in the year 2012 and has celebrated its golden jubilee during 2012-13.

‘alcheme’ is a forum for lively interaction of our students and staff with the alumni of the department. The silver reunions and other get together of various former batches are been conducted in the department. The contributions of these batches have been effectively used for furnishing of department library, seminar hall, Process simulation lab, and for purchasing books to the department library. The department is accredited by Institution of Engineers, TCS, Wipro and is ISO certified.

The department is marching forward to accomplish its goal “to evolve the department as a Centre of Excellence in Chemical Engineering and allied fields giving thrust to research and consultancy”.
