It garnered great participation which included highly competitive and brilliant participants from inside and outside the college.

The different events that were conducted under the banner of Quintessence are as follows:

Code Design

Code  design was a competition based on basics of Digital electronics. The input and output codes were given and the participants were required to design and realize a circuit using basic logic gates and flip flops, that matched the given input-output conditions. The play of just ones and zeroes seemed quite easy to crack in the beginning, but had more to them than what was superficial. There were many who tried their hands at this. A team from Vidya academy of Science and Technology won the first prize.

Interfuse

This was a hardware event that we had organized.2 The participant had to neatly solder all the components of a given circuit onto a circuit board. The soldering required to be perfect and the circuit had to give the expected output when tested. Shorting if occurred, was treated as an error. The soldered boards were evaluated based on these parameters. Aswinkumar S of S7 ECE was the winner of this competition. Since basic soldering skill was the only thing required to win this competition, a good number of students took part this event.

Robohunt
3‘Robohunt’ was basically a treasure hunt.  The hidden robotic parts needed to be hunted down based on the given clues and assembled.  After assembling, the robotic vehicle had to be driven through a track. The team that completed this task in the shortest time duration was considered the winner. The hunt consisted of 6 clues and each clue led to a destination. A team from CET became the winners with the shortest time duration (15 minutes). The event was received well and the participants enjoyed the hunt.

Darkroom

The Dark room was an intricately set maze through which one had to find his way out by solving simple tasks. The participants had to crawl into the room and travel through the darkness. They would encounter a task at each of the five check points. Only if the task is successfully completed would they be permitted to move forward. Else they would reach the EXIT. The person who completes all the five would bag the prize. Of all the teams that participated, some reached the third level and very few made it to the fourth level. Fourth level seemed to be the toughest of all. Complete darkness, accompanied by horror symbols along with perfect acoustic and visual effects created an eerie atmosphere. The Dark Room was the most successful event as far as participation was concerned. There was always a rush to see this, on all three days.

EXPO

5The Expo consisted of exhibits from Akashavani, All India Radio, Ramavarmapuram. The Expo included photographs of major events and people of Akashavani and ancient models of devices like Radio and Discs. Apart from GECians, students from other colleges also came to visit the EXPO and felt that it was informative and worth visiting

INFORMALS

The informals of Quintessence included simple minute-to-win games. The contestants competed to accomplish eight simple tasks within a stipulated time frame (2 minutes). Only a person who qualified in the first three levels was allowed to participate further. The participants were cheered by a large group of people. The live commentary by the co-ordinators was strong enough to draw in people’s attention. This was a crowd gathering element of Q’16 and thus indirectly helped bringing in significant number of registrations. Also, this event kept the department lively and full of activity throughout.
