About Mechanical Department

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Government Engineering College, Thrissur, holds a distinguished position as a premier technical education provider in Kerala. As a foundational engineering discipline, the department is a leading destination for mechanical engineering education within the state. Its extensive network of alumni, who have achieved global success, serves as a testament to its rich heritage and enduring commitment to academic excellence.

Established in 1957 with the inception of the Bachelor of Engineering (subsequently Bachelor of Technology) program in Mechanical Engineering, the department is among the oldest in Kerala and has significantly shaped the region’s engineering landscape. Initially affiliated with the University of Kerala, its affiliation later transitioned to the University of Calicut and subsequently to APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University, Kerala, in 2015. The department offers a comprehensive portfolio of programs, including the B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering, and M.Tech. degrees in Production Engineering, Internal Combustion Engines and Turbo Machinery, and Industrial Engineering and Management. The B.Tech. program has received multiple accreditations from the National Board of Accreditation (NBA), underscoring its adherence to rigorous academic standards.

The department is supported by a dedicated team comprising 37 faculty members and 36 technical staff, possessing expertise across a broad spectrum of mechanical engineering domains and laboratory practices. The Mechanical Engineering laboratories and workshops are highly regarded as among the finest in the state, complemented by numerous research laboratories. Additionally, the department features a student-managed SAE workshop, where vehicles are designed and fabricated for participation in national-level competitions. The faculty members possess exceptional credentials and expertise within their respective fields. Recognized as an Approved Research Centre by the University of Calicut in 1998, the department actively fosters a culture of research and innovation. It has achieved significant milestones, including ISO 9001:2008 certification, recognition as a Quality Improvement Programme (QIP) Centre by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and selection for Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) Phase II funding from the World Bank.

As one of the most sought-after institutions in Kerala for engineering education, the department provides comprehensive placement support to its graduates. Prominent recruiters in core mechanical engineering sectors include BPCL, Reliance, Nayara Energy, L&T, JSW, MRF, Saint-Gobain, SLB, Renault Nissan, SFO technologies, Anora Technologies, Plant Lipids, and Hyundai, in addition to various software companies.
